It's June 1904 and Lady Marjorie is having her portrait painted by Guthrie Scone, a Scottish aristocrat turned avant-garde painter. A visit by Clemence the parlourmaid, now known by everyone as Sarah, to Scone's studio nearly leads to a major scandal.
