Two months into a murder investigation, DCI Roisin Connor's case is at a dead end. Mike Walker is haunted by an old unsolved murder on which he was chief investigating officer and which bears similarities to the current case. A trawl through the police database reveals two unsolved murders of gifted schoolgirls, one dating back to 1997. Connor turns for assistance to a visiting American profiler.
