Classic sitcoms on TV right now

Summer TV doesn't need to revolve entirely around the newest reality formats and competitive shows. There are moments when viewers simply want to unwind with comedy that doesn't demand intense concentration or emotional investment. Here's what's playing on UK television this July that'll do exactly that.

Friends – Channel 5

This one's basically comfort food for your brain. Ross and Rachel's whole thing might drive you mad, but somehow you keep watching anyway. Channel 5 loves putting it on weekend mornings, which works perfectly when you're nursing a coffee and can't be bothered with anything too demanding. The six of them just click together in a way that feels natural even when they're being completely ridiculous.

Family Guy – ITV2

If you're after something completely mental, this is your show. A talking dog, a baby plotting world domination, and Peter Griffin being an absolute disaster – it's not exactly highbrow entertainment, but that's the point. ITV2 usually sticks it on Friday nights, probably because they know you'll be in the right mood for complete nonsense by then.

Sex and the City – Sky Mix

Four women living their best lives in New York, talking about everything your mum probably wouldn't want to hear at dinner. Carrie's always having some crisis about men or shoes while the others deal with their own romantic disasters. Sky Mix tends to show it in the evenings which makes sense because it's definitely not one for the kids. The fashion alone is worth watching.

The Big Bang Theory – E4

A bunch of incredibly smart people who can't figure out how to talk to anyone normal. Sheldon's obsessive, compulsive tendencies and Leonard's hopeless romantic streak make for some properly awkward situations. E4 puts it on during the day, probably because it's safe enough for most audiences but still entertaining. The science jokes go over most people's heads, but the relationship stuff is pretty universal.

Modern Family – E4

This one gets family life absolutely right. It's a proper mess most of the time, makes you want to hide behind a cushion the rest, but somehow you end up caring about all of them. The way they film it like a real documentary makes you feel like you're secretly watching actual families fall apart and pull together again, which is probably why the funny bits get you right in the gut. E4 sticks it on most mornings.

Comfort series on TV

Some shows just refuse to disappear. They keep popping up in the TV schedules year after year and somehow you still end up watching them even though you've seen every episode about fifteen times. Whatever it is, they're going to be keeping us company through another summer of otherwise forgettable television. On Tv24uk you can see what’s on TV everyday.
