Scott Pilgrim plays bass guitar in a struggling Toronto-based band and pines after his ex-girlfriend, now a success in her own band. At a party he meets Ramona Flowers and instantly is smitten, but in his pursuit of her he is attacked by Matthew Patel who informs Scott that he is the first of seven evil exes that Scott will have to defeat in order to win Ramona.
