The 1572 Paris massacre of the Huguenots has prompted Elizabeth to break off all relations with France. However, the French want an alliance with England against Spain, based on the marriage of Elizabeth to the Duc d'Alencon, the French king's younger brother. Elizabeth herself is not quite so keen.
