Domenicos Theotocopolous was born in Crete. He was to become Spain's adopted son and was dubbed `El Greco'. His style varied greatly, though there is certainly a Venetian influence therein. Gradually his religious beliefs began to dominate his work, giving it a spiritual intensity.
