Dragonwyck (1946)

Nicholas van Ryn is the sinister master of a 19th-century mansion on the Hudson river named Dragonwyck. He oppresses his tenants and his obese wife. Miranda is invited to live with her distant cousin in order to be his daughter's governess. She and Nicholas marry after he disposes of his inconvenient wife, who cannot bear him the son he wants. However, it takes Miranda little time to realise that he is both mad and a murderer.
