Homicide police hand the case of a retired Marine colonel found murdered with an axe over to NCIS when they are unable to solve the case, despite all the circumstantial evidence pointing to the deceased's drug-addicted son. They discover the suspect's mother went missing two years previously and Ziva suggests he may have killed more than one parent, while the family's neighbour is revealed to also have had a motive for wanting the man dead.
