The former Royal Marine revisits old friends when he meets members of the Matis tribe, but the reception is lukewarm due to their wariness of outsiders they hold responsible for the diseases that killed many of them. Bruce also meets the loggers who are blamed for cutting down great swathes of the forest. Farther along the river, the Marubos prove more lively with dancing and rituals through the night.
